Meaning, Language, and Behaviour

In this series we will discuss ideas about meaning, language, and behaviour in relation to some of the main concerns of the Pittsburgh School and how these might connect with the philosophy of education:

  1. How is meaning possible? McDowell, Mind, Value, and Reality
  2. Bottom-up or Top-down Semantic Explanation? Brandom, Articulating Reasons
  3. Rules and 'tied behavior' Sellars, Language, Rules and and Behavior
  4. Rules 'as something which can be shared but not communicated' Sellars, Language, Rules and Behavior
  5. Meaning, Habit, and the Myth of the Given - Steven Levine, Pragmatism, objectivity, and experience
  6. Two pleas for interpretation - Meredith Williams, Blind Obedience

Let me know any thoughts you have. Looking forward to our discussions!
